My flight to Auckland on February 2 was scheduled for 845am, so that meant I had to spend at least the night of the 1st on the mainland, but with the weather getting worse, and no guarantee that the ferry would run on Wednesday, I decided to head back to the mainland on Tuesday, the 31st.
After hearing pretty good things from some other travelers, I ended up at Wailoaloa Beach Resort, which, as it turns out, isn't particularly close to a beach, or quite what I would consider a resort. However, it was only $8 US/night and included free wifi (sort of) and breakfast, so I couldn't complain too much. But motel 6 would've been a significant upgrade, and it was literally less than 50 yards from the airport runway, with flights coming and going at all hours.
The ferry ride back to the mainland, like the one the previous Monday, was pretty atrocious - very rough seas, sick people everywhere. It also took about 5.5 hours, an hour longer than normal, in part because there was mass exodus from the islands, with some of the smaller islands requiring evacuation with the tropical storm heading for Fiji, in addition to people deciding to leave who didn't want to sit on an island while it rained for several days.
Sorry no pictures from Day 9 - would've taken some pictures from the ferry, but rain was blowing in from all angles, and I figured the camera isn't exactly waterproof.
Day 10 - Wednesday, February 1
The tropical depression had been upgraded to a full on cyclone at this point, and Fiji was catching the outer bands of that on Wednesday. So once again, I just sat and watched it rain (sideways) all day. I was hoping I could use the day of downtime and free wifi to upload pictures and catch up on the blog, but unfortunately the free wifi was pretty worthless.
I opted not to add to my already sufficient collection of pictures of rain, but I did get one with a little friend I made. About the only thing more prevalent than these little geckos in Fiji are mosquitoes. If you ever go, make sure to pack some insect repellant.
