Day 214 - Thursday, August 23
As noted previously, I took the bus from Korcula
to Dubrovnik on Thursday. Once I got checked into the hostel, I went and checked out the old town. Wow. Whereas Split, Hvar and Korcula each had an "old town" that was nearly a thousand years old and quite impressive in its own right, Dubrovnik was on a whole other level. Unfortunately such a spectacular city draws tourists like me and the whole city was overrun with tourists and shops catering to tourists. Nonetheless it was really impressive, and that night I only saw a small bit of it on the way to and from dinner. A few pictures:
Day 215 - Friday, August 24
Like Hvar, Dubrovnik has a fortress on a hilltop that overlooks the old town. Despite it being pretty warm out, I decided to get some exercise and climb up to the top of the hill. Some photos:
Inside the fortress at the top, there was a museum display about the war between Croatia and its neighboring countries in the early 1990s, in which Dubrovnik, including the old town, was a major target of relentless bombing by Serbia and Montenegro. It was very interesting to see some of the news clips from that time showing a very different Dubrovnik from the tourist haven it is now.
After the hill, I headed back to the old town to check it out in the daylight, where I had my first entire pizza of the day. Some photos as I wandered around:
Eventually I found the cliffside bar that Corinne and Adrea had recommended, which is located on the rocks, just outside the walls of the old town. After verifying that this girl didn't die, I did a little cliff jumping myself
I then wandered on around to another beach area known to be a popular spot for cliff jumping.
And I caught another pretty nice sunset:
Day 216 - Saturday, August 25
Saturday, I decided to check out some of the areas outside of the city. First I headed a little south, which provided gorgeous views of the old town:
And then I headed over to the port, north of the old town, mostly because I wanted to check on bus times for heading south the next day, and go ahead and get a ticket. A photo of that area:
Saturday night I headed back to the old town, where there was a pretty cool concert being performed in the old town square by some orchestra.
